While Hunter Biden has faced widespread scrutiny for his overseas business ties, there have been few comprehensive efforts to provide the context needed to understand his actions — but that might be about to change.
Not only is the Washington Examiner reporting that a congressional report about his foreign dealings is expected by the end of the month, one Republican senator says it could have serious implications for his father, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
“In about a week”
U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) made his recent remarks on the topic during an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
“Stay tuned,” he said. “In about a week, we’re going to learn a whole lot more of Vice President Biden’s unfitness for office.”
As for the younger Biden, Johnson said the Senate Homeland Security and governmental affairs committee, which he chairs, is preparing an interim report regarding dealings with the Ukrainian energy firm Burisma Holdings.
According to a June article by the Washington Examiner, a public relations firm linked to Burisma was forced to surrender more than 2,600 pages of information to the Senate committee.
“We asked Blue Star Strategies, this Democrat-led lobbying firm that was representing Burisma back on December 3 to start cooperating with our committee,” Johnson said. “Six months later, they had turned over 149 pages and sent a letter saying they are fully cooperating. The subpoena now has resulted in 2,600 pages of information, so we’ve learned that subpoenas work.”
“A foreign attack”
Hunter Biden joined Burisma’s board of directors in 2014 and critics have speculated that this potentially explains his father’s pressure on the Ukrainian government to fire a top prosecutor who had reportedly been looking into the company.
Biden spokesman Andrew Bates, however, strongly denounced Johnson’s rhetoric, accusing him of trying to divert attention “away from any oversight of the catastrophically botched federal response to the pandemic.”
In reaction to the GOP plan to release an interim report, Bates wondered aloud about the motivation behind that plan.
“To subsidize a foreign attack against the sovereignty of our elections with taxpayer dollars — an attack founded on a long-disproven, hardcore right-wing conspiracy theory that hinges on Senator Johnson himself being corrupt and that the Senator has now explicitly stated he is attempting to exploit to bail out Donald Trump’s re-election campaign,” he said.
Nevertheless, there are plenty of questions surrounding the actions of both the Democratic nominee and his son — and Americans asking those questions hope they will be addressed in a forthcoming Senate report.
