The conclusion of U.S. Attorney John Durham’s probe of the Russia collusion investigation could well crush the Democrats, according to President Donald Trump.
The attorney general’s handpicked prosecutor is uncovering a spying scandal of “breathtaking” proportions, Trump said Tuesday, according to the Washington Examiner.
Trump: Durham evidence “breathtaking”
Trump and his supporters have invested high hopes in Durham’s criminal probe, which is looking into the origins of the Trump–Russia “witch hunt” that cast a shadow over at least the first half of Trump’s presidency.
Maligned by Democrats as a cynical attempt to undermine the Mueller investigation, the Durham probe is said to be looking at a sprawling conspiracy to spy on the president that was carried out by some of his most public foes.
With months to go before the election, the president’s supporters are anxious for answers — but Trump suggested to Fox Business Network’s Lou Dobbs that Durham will not disappoint.
“We caught them spying. Now it’s up to our attorney general. As you know, I wanted them to do it. I didn’t want to get overly involved. Maybe I should, maybe I shouldn’t, but I do hear it’s breathtaking what they’ve found,” Trump said. “That’s all I can say, breathtaking.”
According to NBC News, Durham may be finishing his probe soon, and he is expected to interview John Brennan, the former head of the CIA and a high-profile Trump critic.
“This should never happen again”
While the basis for Trump’s comments to Dobbs remains unclear, Barr has made no secret of the fact that he is disturbed by Durham’s findings, as Fox News has reported.
The attorney general has said Americans can expect “developments” in the probe before summer’s end, but many Trump supporters are concerned that a Biden victory in November would spell the end for Durham’s probe, if it’s not finished by then.
At a House Judiciary Committee hearing last week, Barr said he would not rule out releasing a report before the election, but he warned against impatience, saying that justice “isn’t something you order up on a schedule like you order pizza.”
Despite the political implications of the probe, the president said that he hopes his successors never have to live through the kind of endless investigations he has endured over the last several years.
“And hopefully, it’ll come out soon. But it’s beyond what anybody ever thought even possible, how bad it is. How bad it is and how corrupt it is. But I’m going to let them do that. I’m not going to do that. It’s a horrible thing that took place, and it should never be allowed to happen to another president,” Trump said.
