Trump says Harris was his top ‘draft pick’ to be Biden’s running mate

Donald Trump couldn’t be happier with Joe Biden’s choice of running mate.

The president didn’t hesitate to gloat after his rival settled on Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) on Tuesday, with Trump deriding the senator as his top “draft pick” to campaign against this fall, as The Hill reported.

“She did very poorly”

Harris had long been favored for the role before Biden made it official by praising Harris as a “fearless fighter for the little guy.”

The news ended months of speculation and started a new round of conjecture over whether Biden had made a savvy choice or a fatal blunder. Trump didn’t hide his feelings on the matter, labeling Harris political deadweight with a “nasty” personality at his news conference.

The president said he was “surprised” that Biden chose a candidate who is clearly unpopular, pointing to the failure of her much-hyped presidential campaign.

“A lot of people would say that might be the pick. I was more surprised than anything else because she did so poorly. Many people did much better than her in the primary. She did very poorly in the primaries and that’s like a poll. That’s like a poll.”

Harris’ own presidential run fizzled out in December, long before the primaries began in earnest. Her campaign peaked after she all but called Biden a racist during the first debate, a moment that cast an ironic shadow over Tuesday’s developments.

“Very disrespectful”

The president expressed some astonishment that Biden would choose someone who had been so “nasty” to him personally, also mentioning her treatment of Justice Brett Kavanaugh during the judge’s scorched-earth Supreme Court confirmation hearing in 2018.

“She was very very nasty. She was probably nastier than even Pocahontas [Elizabeth Warren] to Joe Biden,” Trump said. “She was very disrespectful to Joe Biden and it’s hard to pick somebody that’s that disrespectful.”

Trump’s response came as his campaign rushed to define Harris as a “phony” radical leftist in a campaign ad, contrasting the manipulative senator with the unsuspecting “slow Joe.”

The president continued to project confidence Wednesday morning, as he poked fun at Biden for choosing his dream opponent, as The Hill reported separately.

“@KamalaHarris started strong in the Democrat Primaries, and finished weak, ultimately fleeing the race with almost zero support,” Trump tweeted. “That’s the kind of opponent everyone dreams of!”
