Speculation swirls that release of findings in Durham probe is imminent

According to Paul Sperry of Real Clear Investigations, the country is reaching a crucial point in U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation of the Russia collusion probe.

The reason for Sperry’s conclusion has to do with the upcoming presidential election scheduled for Nov. 3.

Crucial date drawing near

Sperry writes that movement on Durham’s investigation may well be imminent because of the Justice Department’s “unwritten 60-day rule.”

“Prosecutors avoid public disclosure of investigative steps related to electoral matters or the return of indictments against a candidate for office within 60 days of a primary or general election,” an official document reads. “The 60-Day Rule is not written or described in any Department policy or regulation. Nevertheless, high-ranking Department and FBI officials acknowledged the existence of a general practice that informs Department decisions.”

According to Sperry, this means that practically speaking, Durham has until Sept. 4 — the Friday before Labor Day — to release his findings if they are to be made public in advance of the general election. This facts has led many to speculate as to whether such a scenario is indeed likely.

Insider speculates

Former Assistant FBI Director Chris Swecker, who knows and has worked closely with Durham says that he believes news will likely be made in the very near future, saying, “I would find it hard to believe that he punts under any circumstances.”

According to Swecker, Durham would never take the risk of throwing away all his hard work, which is essentially what he would be doing if he waits until after the election to release his findings.

“There’s no question that if Biden is elected, everything Durham has done at that point will be canceled out,” Swecker said. In contrast, if Durham does release his findings, and Biden is elected, Swecker argues that “it would make it very difficult for Biden’s appointees to undo his charges or bury the results of his probe.”

“John knows this and I fully expect he will take action before the election,” Swecker added.

Indictments predicted

Swecker also expressed his belief that Durham will be doing more than simply issuing a report.

“I know John Durham. I worked under him on the Whitey Bulger case, which resulted in indictments of [corrupt FBI] agents,” Swecker said. “I don’t think he’s the least bit squeamish about bringing indictments if there is criminal exposure. He’s onto something, I’m convinced of it, otherwise he would have folded up his tent by now.”

With Sept. 4 less than a month away, it won’t be long before Americans see once and for all what Durham decides to do and whether those responsible for a coup attempt against a duly elected president are held to account.
