Report: Trump plans to deliver campaign speech hours before Biden accepts Dems’ nod for president

Donald Trump seems to be making sure that Joe Biden is rattled when he accepts his presidential nomination later this week.

According to The Hill, the Trump campaign announced last weekend that the president plans to deliver a speech attacking Biden’s record on Thursday, just hours before Biden accepts the Democrats’ White House nomination at the party’s national convention.

“Joe Biden failing America”

In a Trumpian, symbolic snub, the president will be speaking from Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden’s hometown, according to USA Today. Biden will accept the nomination from Delaware later that day in a virtual format, on the fourth day of the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee.

According to The Hill, the Trump campaign said that the president’s 3 p.m. speech will focus on “a half century of Joe Biden failing America,” a message that Trump especially hopes to bring to voters in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state that helped lift him to victory in 2016.

In reply, the Biden campaign called the move “a pathetic attempt to distract from the fact that Trump’s presidency stands for nothing but crises, lies, and division — the opposite of what Pennsylvanians are hungry for and what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris represent.”

“From Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to Joe’s hometown of Scranton, voters across the Keystone State know that Joe Biden will restore the soul of our nation and fight for Pennsylvania families every day in office,” the campaign added, according to The Hill.

Trump on the offense

Trump and Biden are indeed fighting hard to win Pennsylvania, where Biden has been leading in most polls, according to RealClearPolitics.

But the move comes as Trump appears to be gaining on Biden in national polling, with a new CNN survey showing Trump behind by just four points, the New York Post notes.

Seeking to solidify his position, the president is on the offensive this week with a tour of four battleground states, ending in Pennsylvania. He also traveled to Minnesota and Wisconsin on Monday, USA Today reported, and he will visit Arizona on Tuesday.

The president isn’t aiming for subtlety with his message as he looks to strike a bold contrast between his “law and order” candidacy and Biden’s, which he likened to a vessel for “left-wing extremists” seeking the nation’s destruction, according to a report from the Associated Press.

“Joe Biden is the puppet of left-wing extremists, trying to erase our borders, eliminate our police, indoctrinate our children, vilify our heroes, take away our energy. You know all about that. Take away our energy. If you can believe it. No fossil fuel. Destroy our second amendment, attack the right to life and replace American freedom with left-wing fascism,” Trump said in Minnesota, according to a transcript from Rev.

This is classic Trump, to be sure. The president is playing to win.
