GOP senator: ‘Andrew McCabe should have been indicted a year ago’

On Friday, Fox News reported that former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith would be pleading guilty to a single federal charge for illegally altering an email related to 2016 Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. The case arose out of U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation into abuse committed during the infamous Trump–Russia collusion probe.

But Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson (R) doesn’t think that Clinesmith will be the only person to get an indictment notice — and he has strong feelings about who should be next. “Andrew McCabe should have been indicted a year ago after the [Inspector General Michael Horowitz] report,” the senator said Sunday, according to Newsmax.

The Republican’s remarks about McCabe came on the most recent episode of Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.

“He lied to his own FBI investigators,” Johnson said of the former FBI deputy director, according to Newsmax. “Remember George Papadopoulos spent 10 days in jail…for lying to the FBI.”

“A host of indictments”

According to Newsmax, Johnson told Fox on Sunday that in light of Papadopoulos’ sentence, he “can only assume from that standpoint that there are much greater offenses that they are investigating Andrew McCabe.”

“But from what we already know, there should be a host of indictments” from Durham, the two-term Wisconsin senator stressed. “We need to get to the truth as quickly as possible.”

According to USA Today, Durham, the U.S. Attorney for Connecticut, began his investigation in May of 2019 after being tasked by Attorney General Bill Barr with looking into what transpired before and during Robert Mueller’s Trump–Russia inquiry. Mueller’s months-long investigation turned up no evidence of collusion by the president, as Politico noted at the time.

“Spying on a campaign is a big deal,” Barr said at the start of Durham’s probe, according to USA Today. “I think spying did occur. The question is whether it was adequately predicated.”

Fox News reported last fall that Durham’s investigation had morphed into a full-blown criminal inquiry. Clinesmith’s was the first criminal case to stem from it.

“Hiding the ball”

As The Epoch Times noted, Sen. Johnson, who serves as chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, is conducting an investigation of his own into the Trump–Russia inquiry.

According to Newsmax, the Republican told Fox on Sunday that “[former FBI Director] James Comey, [former Director of National Intelligence James] Clapper, [former CIA director John] Brennan…are on the list” of individuals he plans to interview.

“What has delayed my interviews of those individuals is, we don’t have the documents,” Johnson complained, according to Newsmax. “We absolutely need those documents that is what the FBI has been so successful at hiding the ball on.”
