The Democrats and their media allies have fully embraced a brand new conspiracy theory about President Donald Trump, namely that he is seeking to sabotage the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) in order to undermine mail-in voting and “steal” the 2020 election.
In that vein, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is considering shortening her chamber’s August recess and calling Congress back into session to address the supposed crisis involving the USPS, Politico reported.
Pelosi considers ending recess
At the heart of this new controversy are unfounded allegations from the left that recently-appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a businessman and Trump donor tapped with overhauling the long-struggling USPS, is deliberately taking actions that will make it more difficult for the service to adequately and quickly handle the expected surge of mail-in ballots in the coming election.
Politico reported that the USPS issue and the possibility of an early end to the August recess was the subject of an emergency leadership call on Saturday involving Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC).
Sources suggest that the speaker could call for everyone in the House to return to the capital within the next two weeks in order to address the planned organizational changes that DeJoy has already begun to implement.
Democrats sound election alarm
The Hill reported that a number of rank-and-file Democrats — as well as some of their constituents — have raised the alarm in recent days about the supposed crisis at the USPS and the potential impact it could have on the upcoming election that, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, will undoubtedly include a much larger-than-average reliance on absentee and mail-in ballots.
One unnamed Democratic aide with knowledge of the leadership call confirmed to a CNN reporter that, “Yes, there are discussions to bring the House back to address the Postal Service crisis, timing not clear yet. Next week and week after (are) being discussed.”
A likely focus of the early return would be a bill proposed by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), chair of the House Oversight Committee, that would expressly forbid DeJoy from proceeding with any of his proposed operational and organizational changes to the USPS without explicit guidance and approval from the House.
Statement issued
All of that was a central theme of a joint statement issued on Friday by Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that praised the USPS and insisted that “Postmaster General DeJoy must quickly reverse his operational changes that have led to delays and service reductions for too many Americans and threaten to undermine our democracy.”
The Democratic leaders accused congressional Republicans, President Trump, and “his cronies” of waging an “all-out assault on the Postal Service and its role in ensuring the integrity of the 2020 election.”
They further alleged that Trump “made plain that he will manipulate the operations of the Post Office to deny eligible voters the ballot in pursuit of his own re-election. The President’s own words confirm: he needs to cheat to win.”
The absurdity of that statement aside, if the Democrats’ belief in alleged shenanigans taking place at the USPS will result in their cutting short their umpteenth recess vacation of the year and actually returning to Washington, D.C. to get back to work — even if it is largely just to focus on yet another anti-Trump conspiracy theory — then so be it.
