Ghislaine Maxwell, alleged “madam” for billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, has been taken off suicide watch, according to Breitbart.
Lawyers for Maxwell revealed the detail in a letter requesting that she be removed from solitary confinement and housed with the general population at the Brooklyn detention facility where she is being held.
Maxwell taken off suicide watch
Epstein himself was supposed to be under strict jailhouse scrutiny when he was found dead in his jail cell last summer, prompting outrage and speculation of a plot against the disgraced financier’s life.
A year later, Epstein’s former girlfriend is chafing under a “uniquely onerous” watch in the facility where she is awaiting trial for having allegedly recruited underage girls for Epstein to sexually abuse. In the letter, her lawyers complain that Maxwell is being treated unfairly because of her connection to Epstein and is unable to adequately prepare for her trial, which is scheduled for next July, according to CNBC.
“It has become apparent that the [Bureau of Prisons’] treatment of Ms. Maxwell is a reaction to the circumstances surrounding the pretrial detention and death of Mr. Epstein,” the letter stated.
As a likely reaction to lapses that occurred in the monitoring of Epstein, Maxwell is under a surveillance regime that includes continuous watch “by security cameras and by multiple prison guards, many of whom do not appear to be regular MDC personnel,” the attorneys indicated.
Murder plot possible?
Maxwell’s lawyers also revealed that their client has been taken off suicide watch, as was Epstein before her.
“Until recently, Ms. Maxwell was subjected to suicide watch protocols, including being woken up every few hours during the night and being forced to wear special clothing,” they wrote.
Still, her lawyers are demanding that she be removed from remaining restrictions and be lodged with the general prison population, arguing that she is not, in fact, a suicide risk.
However, in light of the suspicious circmstances that surrounded Epstein’s in-custody death, it seems unlikely that the authorities will take any chances in such a sensitive case. Maxwell is being held without bail after a judge declared her a flight risk following her arrest in July at an isolated New Hampshire home.
According to multiple reports, Maxwell believes that Epstein was killed and she is afraid of meeting the same fate, as the New York Post noted.
“Everyone’s view, including Ghislaine’s, is Epstein was murdered. She received death threats before she was arrested,” a former friend of Maxwell’s told the British The Sun newspaper.
