Former Vice President Joe Biden’s once-strong lead in the polls is collapsing fast.
According to a Sunday report from Breitbart, two recent polls show President Donald Trump gaining ground on the Democrat White House hopeful. The president is now trailing his Democrat opponent by just three points.
Biden’s lead shrinks
The first of the two polls highlighted by Breitbart came from The Hill/HarrisX, which surveyed 2,850 registered voters between Aug. 2–5. The survey had a margin of error of 1.8 points.
The poll showed Biden leading President Trump in support, 43% to 40%, respectively, putting the former VP down from a seven-point lead in mid-July, when he had 45% support to Trump’s 38%, as Breitbart noted.
Of the other respondents, 9% were undecided, 5% intended to vote for a third-party candidate, and 3% had no intention of voting at all.
The pollsters pointed to two key demographic groups that, based on their findings, contributed the most to Trump’s surge in support. Trump gained four points among Midwestern voters while Biden lost six points, and Trump gained four points among independent voters while Biden held steady, giving Trump a two-point lead — 35% to Biden’s 33% — among that group.
Trump gains ground
Breitbart also featured a poll from Rasmussen, which surveyed 2,500 likely voters between July 29–30 and again between Aug 2–4. The survey had a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
According to Breitbart, the Rasmussen poll similarly showed Biden with a three-point lead over Trump, with 48% to Trump’s 45%. According to Rasmussen, 3% of respondents said they were voting for a different candidate, and 3% were undecided.
Those numbers mark a steep decline for Biden: a week prior, the former vice president held a six-point lead over Trump, with 48% to Trump’s 42% support.
Three months to go
The most recent RealClearPolitics average of polls, which includes both the Hill/HarrisX and Rasmussen polls, gave Biden a 6.4-point lead over Trump, with Biden holding 49.1% support and Trump holding 42.7%.
Biden’s current lead is down from the 9.3-point advantage he held just a couple of weeks ago, and down further still from the 10.2-point lead he enjoyed in late June.
Point being: the race is close. And the numbers are likely only going to get closer as Election Day draws nearer.
