The latest polls confirm that President Donald Trump is gaining on rival Joe Biden as November’s election draws closer.
Biden’s lead is almost down to within the margin of error in two national polls, according to a recent round-up from Breitbart.
Bad news for Biden
As Breitbart reports, a new poll from Hill–HarrisX released on Wednesday found that 43% of voters would choose Biden if the election were held now, compared to 40% of respondents who went with Trump.
It was a significant improvement for the current commander-in-chief, who was down by seven points in the previous poll, The Hill noted. His deficit is now nearly within the poll’s error margin of less than two points.
Another poll cited by Breitbart came from Rasmussen. Released Wednesday, the survey found that Trump is behind by three points, with Biden having the support of 48% of voters and Trump holding 45%, Breitbart noted. This, too, was an improvement for the incumbent, who was down six points in Rasmussen’s previous poll. Trump is also close to within the poll’s two-point margin of error.
These are but the latest results to suggest that Trump’s position is improving, even as the president faces powerful headwinds from a pandemic that his foes insist has permanently — and perhaps fatally — damaged his presidency.
On Sunday, Trump was behind Biden by 6.9 points in a RealClearPolitics average of major polls, an improvement from June 23, when he was behind by 10.2%, according to Breitbart.
Trump makes bold plays
Trump is also showing new strength in battleground states that were critical to his victory in 2016, like Pennsylvania, Florida, and Michigan.
According to data from RealClearPolitics, the president’s deficit in Michigan dropped to 6.3% on Monday, the lowest margin since early June, not counting Aug. 3. In Florida, he is within four points of Biden on average.
To be sure, Trump has room to improve, but the race remains fluid as the president appears to return to form with strident, “America First” rhetoric and a series of bold plays to solidify a contrast between himself and Biden, who he has sought to portray as feeble, corrupt, and a stooge of powerful interests.
As CNBC reported, the president issued a series of executive orders over the weekend to shore up emergency relief for Americans struggling through the coronavirus, his latest effort to project an active and vigorous image heading into a referendum on his tumultuous presidency, and particularly his response to the virus.
Despite some discouraging polling lately, Trump can only go up from here.
