New York appears to have a problem – or, rather, another problem.
Fox Business reports that so many people have been moving out of New York City that local moving companies have been struggling to keep up. And New York politicians like Gov. Andrew Cuomo aren’t happy.
Straight from the horse’s mouth
For its report, Fox Business interviewed several local moving companies. One is the New York-based company “Oz Moving.”
“By July 15 Oz Moving was booked to capacity for the remainder of the month, and while it is always busy over the summer, 2020 marked the first time in 27 years the company was unable to take on additional jobs so early on,” Fox Business reported.
The same phenomenon was confirmed by Roadway Moving. The company’s president, Ross Sapir, told Fox Business that it has been “Insanely busy and for the last 3 months” adding “we couldn’t keep up with the demand.”

Fox Business cited some numbers from United Van Lines.
“Between May and July there was a 95 percent year over year increase in interest in moving out of Manhattan,” the report reads, “That compares with a 19 percent increase in moving interest in the U.S., overall.”
The exodus was also acknowledged by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who said at a recent press conference that “We’re trying to get people to come back. They’re not coming back right now.”
What’s happening?
One question you probably have is “where are these people going?” According to Fox Business, “The top destinations for people who moved out of New York City between March and August were Florida and California – which together comprised 28 percent of relocations. Texas and North Carolina made up 16 percent of moves.”
The other question you are probably asking is “why?” And, the answer, at least at the moment, is anybody’s guess.
Perhaps, for example, it has to do with the coronavirus, and people not needing to live in New York City because they can now work remotely. Perhaps, people are fed up with the likes of Cuomo and other New York leaders and just have finally decided to leave. Perhaps both – who knows?
But, this is certainly something that we’ll have to keep an eye on going forward.
