Many have speculated that former Vice President Joe Biden would decline to serve a second term as president if elected — and in recent weeks, some have even wondered if he’d make it through his first four years. Now, remarks from one of the nation’s top Democrats suggest that “Joe 30330” may be replaced in the left’s spotlight sooner than later.
According to Breitbart, California Rep. Maxine Waters (D) argued in a Thursday interview that the vice presidency would only be a stepping stone for Biden’s newly announced running mate, California Sen. Kamala Harris (D).
“She ran for president, and maybe someday she’ll run again. We don’t know,” Waters told Spectrum News 1’s Inside the Issues, according to Breitbart.
“We love her ambition”
Biden, who is poised to accept the Democrats’ 2020 nomination for the White House next week, first announced his pick for vice president Tuesday, as USA Today reported. Since then, figures on all ends of the political spectrum have weighed in — and it seems as far as establishment Dems are concerned, Biden made the perfect choice.
In fact, although Harris lost her 2020 primary bid to Biden, Waters apparently thinks the California senator is Oval Office material.
“Even though she had run in the state of California, she was not really known. It takes an awful lot to get known nationally,” Waters explained to Inside the Issues, according to Breitbart. “This is a big country, a big, diverse country. So she stepped out on the national scene to run for president rather rapidly,” Waters said of Harris’ primary run.
She went on:
Of course, she had been in the United States Senate. Some people had witnessed that she was very competent member of the United States Senate who could question many of our witnesses in ways that would draw the kind of information that she is looking, but they still didn’t know her.
According to the California congresswoman, things have apparently changed.
“I want to tell you a lot of people are thinking ‘Well, not only is she competent and capable, and he picked the right person, but we love her ambition.’ So this may be the next president of the United States,” Waters said of Harris on Thursday, according to Breitbart. “So they will be ready for it because she would have shown who she is. She would have defined herself in ways that people have an appreciation for what she thinks, what that he cares about.”
One step away
Waters isn’t the only one looking forward to a potential Harris presidency. A recent survey from Rasmussen revealed that some 59% of likely voters don’t believe Joe Biden is capable of serving out a full term in office.
Another Rasmussen poll published in late June found that a full 38% of voters believe the former vice president is suffering from “some form of dementia.”
That figure includes 20% of likely Democrat voters and 30% of independent voters; among Republicans, the number believing Biden has dementia rose to 66%. And if they’re right, perhaps Harris really is only one step away from the Oval Office — that is, if Biden can pull off a win this November. Only time will tell.
