Since losing the 2016 presidential election, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been anything but inconspicuous.
Instead, the veteran Democrat has often chimed in publicly on current events, something she did Sunday during an interview on MSNBC in which she took aim at President Donald Trump’s executive orders on coronavirus relief, as Breitbart reported.
Clinton was highly critical of the president’s move to take a series of executive actions after Congress failed to reach a deal on the next round of COVID-19 stimulus measures.
However, although Trump’s orders addressed topics that are typically pet issues on the left, including student loans and protection for renters and struggling homeowners, Clinton remained dismissive.
“It’s a stunt”
“It’s a stunt,” Breitbart quoted Clinton as saying. “There’s no doubt about it. Most likely, as even Republican senators have said, unconstitutional, bypassing Congress, trying to spend money, he has no authority to direct.
“But it’s also meant to be a big diversion from the hard work the Congress should be engaged in to provide the kind of relief that tens of millions of Americans need,” Clinton alleged. “We are still in the midst of this pandemic.
As Breitbart reported, the former secretary of State also took the opportunity to slam the administration’s coronavirus response in a broader sense, saying, “Sadly, we didn’t take the steps for long enough to try to bend the curve, except in a few places around the country, so we’re still coping with it.”
“And we can’t act like it is back to normal,” the two-time failed presidential candidate continued. “People are still unemployed in great numbers. Small businesses have been shuttered, are gasping for help. So the Congress needs to act.”
“I don’t know if he understood”
The former secretary of State took particular issue with Trump’s order providing a temporary payroll tax reprieve to American workers.
“But I think there was something else very significant in what Trump did the other day,” Clinton said. “Basically, he signaled that he is going after Social Security and Medicare,” echoing a favorite Democratic Party scare tactic of years gone by.
Clinton continued, “I don’t know if he understood that. You never know what he knows and doesn’t know about how the government operates. But basically, he was talking about ending the financial contributions we all make into Social Security and Medicare through the payroll tax.”
Though clearly still stinging over the fact that she is not the one occupying the Oval Office, it really is well past time for Mrs. Clinton to exit the political stage once and for all
