Rand Paul reminds Nancy Pelosi that most of the Confederate statues she wants removed depict Democrats

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is pushing to have statues depicting Confederate leaders removed from Capitol Hill, yet as Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) points out, there’s an inconvenient truth about the subject that she seems reluctant to discuss, as Townhall reports.

“As I have said before, the halls of Congress are the very heart of our democracy,” CBS News quoted Pelosi as saying in a letter to Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) as part of her effort to have the allegedly offensive monuments removed.

Blunt and Lofgren serve as chair and co-chair of the Joint Committee Of Congress On the Library, which among other things, is in charge of managing the National Statuary Hall Collection.

“Monuments to men who advocated cruelty and barbarism to achieve such a plainly racist end are a grotesque affront to these ideals,” Pelosi continued. “Their statues pay homage to hate, not heritage. They must be removed.”

An inconvenient truth

In her quest to eradicate what she sees as unacceptable vestiges of the past, Pelosi said:

While I believe it is imperative that we never forget our history lest we repeat it, I also believe that there is no room for celebrating the violent bigotry of the men of the Confederacy in the hallowed halls of the United States Capitol or in places of honor across the country.

However, Sen. Paul responded to Pelosi’s efforts by taking to Twitter and pointing out an especially inconvenient fact about the actual leadership of the Confederacy.

“Hey Nancy glad to see you wanting to expunge the terrible history of White Supremacy, in the Democrat Party!” the Kentucky Republican tweeted.

“Nine of 11 statues of Confederate leaders Pelosi wants removed from Capitol were Democrats,” Paul continued, quoting an article from current events website Just The News.

Pelosi’s troubling ties

The piece to which Paul linked goes on to explain that while two of the Confederate leaders in question were Independents, none were Republicans.

Pelosi herself has a family connection to Confederate statues, as her own father led the dedication of a Confederate monument in 1948 while serving as mayor of Baltimore.

According to Fox News, during his speech at the event, then-Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. offered praise for Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

Today, with our nation beset by subversive groups and propaganda which seeks to destroy our national unity, we can look for inspiration to the lives of Lee and Jackson to remind us to be resolute and determined in preserving our sacred institutions.

Perhaps the speaker should start making amends for her own problematic ties with America’s past rather than rushing to erase all evidence of our nation’s admittedly complex, yet truly inspirational history.
