Cuomo orders travelers to New York to self-quarantine

New York’s Democrat governor seems to have done a complete 180.

After previously threatening lawsuits over state orders requiring travelers from New York to self-quarantine amid a spike in coronavirus cases, Andrew Cuomo has issued a mandate demanding travelers from no fewer than 16 states to self-isolate for 14 days upon their arrival in the Empire State, as former NRA spokeswoman and conservative journalist Dana Loesch pointed out in a Tuesday tweet.

Cuomo’s new approach

Gov. Cuomo announced in a tweet earlier Tuesday that travelers to New York from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah would all be required to “self-quarantine for 14 days.”

As Loesch, who has worked with outlets like Breitbart and TheBlaze, made clear, it’s hard to look past the hypocrisy. As recently as March, Cuomo had threatened to sue over an order from Gina Raimondo, Rhode Island’s Democrat governor, requiring travelers from New York to follow similar isolation measures.

“New York has what it needs and no one is going to attack New York unfairly and no one is going to deprive New York of what it needs,” Cuomo said at the time, according to ABC News.

According to ABC, Raimondo soon adapted her order to require a two-week quarantine for “any person coming to Rhode Island by any mode of transportation after visiting another state for a non-work-related purpose.” In other words, New York was no longer singled out.

Raimondo denied that Cuomo’s lawsuit prompted the change, but her denial did little to quell speculation. Now, some are wondering if Cuomo could soon be getting a taste of his own medicine.

Economy roaring back?

As state leaders battle it out over travel restrictions, cases of the coronavirus continue to climb across the United States. According to a tracker from The New York Times, the U.S. has seen more than 2.6 million cases of COVID-19 thus far, and at least 127,000 deaths.

States including New York have responded to the rise in cases by slowing reopening plans.

Still, President Donald Trump, for his part, has remained optimistic, writing in a tweet Saturday that spikes in cases “will be put out, as necessary.”
