Vice President Mike Pence confirmed this week that he will not be giving in to leftists’ demands.
Breitbart reports that for the second time in as many weeks, Vice President Pence has refused to say “Black lives matter” and instead insisted that “all lives matter.” The vice president most recently asserted as much during an interview Sunday with CBS’s Face the Nation.
“One thing protesters would like to hear is leaders say ‘Black lives matter.’ You won’t say that. Why?” host John Dickerson asked Pence, according to Breitbart.
“The heart of the American people”
After stating that Martin Luther King, Jr. has been an inspiration of his, and that he’s worked to make America a “more perfect union for African Americans,” Pence broke down the problem he has with advocates of the Black Lives Matter movement.
“As a pro-life American, I also believe that all life matters, born and unborn,” Pence said, according to Breitbart. “But what I see in the leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement is a political agenda of the radical left that would defund the police.”
Dickerson then interrupted Pence, according to Breitbart’s transcript, asking the vice president to leave the group’s political agenda out of it and to just say the phrase. Pence didn’t seem fazed.
“That would tear down monuments, that would press a radical left agenda and support calls for the kind of violence that has beset the very communities that they say they’re advocating for,” the vice president continued, as Breitbart reported. “I’ve literally met with African American leaders around this country, and in the national capital area, who made it clear to us they want law and order, they want peace in our streets.”
One last time Dickerson pressed the VP, but Pence held firm. “John, I really believe that all lives matter, and that’s where the heart of the American people lies,” Pence said, according to Breitbart.
“A very real issue”
The interview Sunday echoed one that took place a little over a week ago, when a reporter from an ABC affiliate similarly tried to get the vice president to say “Black lives matter.”
“Well, I don’t accept the fact that there’s a segment of American society that disagrees in the preciousness and importance of every human life,” Pence responded, according to the Washington Examiner. “And it’s one of the reasons why, as we advance important reforms in law enforcement, as we look for ways to strengthen and improve public safety in our cities, we’re not going to stop there.”
The vice president went on to say that “from the founding of this nation, we’ve cherished the ideal that all, all of us are created equal and endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights. And so, all lives matter in a very real sense,” he added, according to the Examiner.
It seems Donald Trump’s right-hand man is holding his ground.
