A judge in New York has temporarily halted the publication of a book by President Donald Trump’s niece that contains derogatory claims about him and other family members.
Judge Hal Greenwald of Dutchess County Supreme Court in New York granted the request of Robert Trump, the president’s younger brother, to halt the book’s publication until it can be determined whether the book violates a nondisclosure agreement entered into by author Mary Trump.
Robert Trump claims that information in the book goes against a nondisclosure agreement that was part of the settlement of Fred Trump Sr.’s estate, The Hill reported. Mary Trump is the daughter of Fred Trump Jr., the president and Robert’s older brother.
Mary Trump and publishers Simon & Schuster, or their attorneys, were ordered to appear in court July 10 to make arguments in the case. Meanwhile, the publisher is constrained from printing the tell-all book or shipping it to retailers.
Will the book be published?
A lower court dismissed Robert Trump’s first attempt to block the book, which is scheduled to be published on July 28. Mary Trump’s attorney said they would immediately appeal the injunction to block the book, which is titled, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.
“The trial court’s temporary restraining order is only temporary but it still is a prior restraint on core political speech that flatly violates the First Amendment. We will immediately appeal,” Ted Boutrous said, adding that the public needs to see the book before the election, according to The Hill.
Robert Trump’s attorneys have vowed to seek legal and monetary damages from Mary Trump and Simon & Schuster if the book is published.
“Short of corrective action to immediately cease their egregious conduct, we will pursue this case to the very end,” Charles Harder said.
The president weighs in
Last month when news of the book first broke, the president said that Mary Trump was “not allowed” to write the book because of the non-disclosure agreement.
Donald Trump also bristled when he was asked about allegations in the book that he “dismissed and derided” his father when he began to have Alheimer’s.
“Actually, the opposite,” he said. “I always had a great relationship. I didn’t know that she said that. That’s a disgraceful thing to say.”
