‘Get out of the way, Nancy Pelosi’: Columnist says progressives are ‘taking over’ the Democratic Party

With statues of historical figures being toppled and films like Gone with the Wind being removed from streaming line-ups, it’s clear that “cancel culture” is alive and well. But at some point, it’s going to come for Democrats, too — and according to one columnist, they have no one but themselves to blame.

During a recent appearance on Fox News, Wall Street Journal columnist Dan Henninger argued that leftists “stood by” while the “seeds of cancel culture” were being planted — and now, Henninger says, progressive protesters across the nation are pushing for longtime leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to “get out of the way,” too.

“The progressives are saying ‘you work for us, get out of the way, Joe Biden, get out of the way, Nancy Pelosi, we are taking over,'” Henninger said Thursday, according to Fox. “And people like Nancy Pelosi are basically saying ‘no problem.'”

It’s coming for you

Henninger called out Pelosi and others on the left during an appearance on America’s Newsroom with host Ed Henry. There, the columnist argued that senior Democratic figures don’t understand the “seeds of cancel culture” and “can’t imagine where this came from.”

“It started on campuses when they enforced and instituted speech codes, which forbade a certain amount of words to be said by people,” he explained, according to Fox. “University presidents were complacent in that. Then they denied tenure to conservative professors who were balanced against groupthink.”

The columnist went on: “Then when the students started to attack their own liberal professors as racists, the universities stood aside, as did their liberal colleagues, and let that happen, too… Liberals in positions of leadership in our institutions stood by and let that happen.”

Now, establishment Dems like Pelosi are doing the same as they face pressure to heed protesters’ demands.

“Will it last?” Henninger asked in a column published ahead of his interview, according to Fox. “I think people across the political spectrum are shell-shocked by the events of these weeks, especially the Taliban-like smashing of monuments and the embrace of lawlessness as an official ideology, with no credible pushback from Joe Biden or other prominent Democrats.

“But,” the columnist concluded, “if history teaches us anything, it’s that the American electorate won’t be pushed around permanently.”

If you can’t take the heat…

Some Democratic politicians are already facing the ire of radical leftists, including Wisconsin state Sen. Tim Carpenter (D), who was reportedly attacked by a mob of anti-police protesters earlier this week outside the Wisconsin State Capitol.

A self-described progressive, Carpenter recalled “getting five, six punches” and “getting kicked in the head” in a subsequent interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The violence started after some of the demonstrators noticed that Carpenter was recording them.

Indeed, it seems even Democrats can’t make those on the far-left happy. But will this lead to a reckoning for Dems come November? Only time will tell.
