Pence fires back after reporter questions Trump admin’s coronavirus response: ‘We’ll get through this’

Mike Pence struck back after an ABC News reporter tried to use the vice president’s faith to attack the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus crisis.

According to the Washington Examiner, ABC’s Byron Pitts asked Pence on Friday’s episode of Nightline if he finds himself “worrying at all” when he “talk[s] to God” about the Americans who have died as a result of COVID-19. But Pence wasn’t taking the bait.

“We’ll come out stronger”

“I ask this not in a political way, but for you sir, like so many of us in our nation, you are a person of deep faith. No one doubts that,” Pitts said Friday, according to the Examiner.

The TV personality went on: “When you talk to God in your moments alone, do you find yourself worrying at all that people you represent, and care deeply about, have died and will die who did not need to because of steps the federal government did not take soon enough?”

Rather than give the media another anti-Trump soundbite, Vice President Pence responded by saying that President Donald Trump and his team are approaching the issue “one American at a time.”

“Well, thank you for mentioning that we are talking about one American at a time,” he said, “and I promise you that’s the way President Trump thinks of this and the way I think of it.”

Pence went on: “We wanted the American people to see the numbers so that we understand the challenging days that lie ahead. But I want people to know that our future is in your hands, that if every one of us will do and put into practice the [social distancing] guidelines for America, that we can bring those numbers down.

“We’ll get through this, and we’ll come out stronger than ever before,” the vice president concluded.

“It’s a shame”

This is far from the first attempt by the mainstream media to attack a high-profile Christian even as they offer help amid a pandemic. When MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell mentioned his faith while announcing at a White House press briefing that his company would be producing face masks to help combat the spread of COVID-19, he was mocked by pundits, as National Review noted.

Similarly, evangelist Franklin Graham’s charity, Samaritan’s Purse, was attacked when it began assisting with the construction of field hospitals in New York City. “It’s a shame that the federal government has left New York with no other choice but to accept charity from bigots,” New York state Sen. Brad Hoylman (D) tweeted on Tuesday.

But whether Democrats like Hoylman realize it or not, President Trump — and his coronavirus task force, headed by Pence — are hard at work. And they’re not ready to throw in the towel just yet.
