‘He’d like to be playing sports’: Trump says son Barron is stuck inside amid coronavirus outbreak

Looks like Barron Trump isn’t enjoying the coronavirus lockdown any more than the rest of us.

According to Breitbart, asked how his youngest son is faring with schools and most businesses closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, President Donald Trump told reporters Saturday that Barron is stuck in his room — though he’d much rather be outside “playing sports.”

White House lockdown

At a briefing in the White House press room Saturday, President Trump was asked how Barron is handling the widespread shutdowns — “not going to school, no sports,” the reporter noted. As The New York Times has reported, Americans across the U.S. have been ordered to shelter in place, leaving their homes only for essentials like groceries and medical appointments.

“He’s like everyone else, I mean, everything’s shut down,” the president said of his 14-year-old son in video shared by Breitbart. “He’s in his room, he’s happy, but he’s not as happy as he could be. He’d like to be playing sports.”

The president also said Barron is “a good athlete and he loves soccer.”

According to Breitbart, President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and their son Barron have remained at the White House throughout the coronavirus outbreak. The president used the fact that his son would rather be playing sports to segue to something that he really wants to do: get the country running again.

“We have to get back, and we have to get back soon,” President Trump said Saturday.

Getting the ball rolling

The presser came just hours after the president held a conference call with commissioners and executives from various professional sports leagues, including the NFL, NHL, and MLB.

According to USA Today, President Trump said during the call that he is hopeful that the NFL season will be able to open on time in September with fans in attendance. He did, however, suggest that the football league move forward with its plans for a “virtual draft” this spring, USA Today noted.

At his White House briefing later Saturday, President Trump again expressed his wish to get fans back in the stands.

“I want fans back in the arenas,” the president said, according to ESPN. “As soon as we can, obviously. And the fans want to be back, too. They want to see basketball and baseball and football and hockey. They want to see their sports. They want to go out onto the golf courses and breathe nice, clean, beautiful fresh air.”

That would surely do a lot to get the U.S. economy, which has taken quite a beating amid the coronavirus crisis, get back on its feet.
