Health officials confirm first two cases of coronavirus in Mexico

A new country has just been added to the list of those with confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.

On Friday, it was reported that the coronavirus has now officially spread to Mexico.

Mexican health officials made the unfortunate announcement yesterday that two individuals within the country have tested positive for the coronavirus.

One of the individuals is said to be in Mexico City while the other is in Sinaloa. According to Fox News, “both patients are medically stable and currently in isolation.”

The Associated Press reported that five family members of one of the infected individuals have also been placed in isolation as a precautionary measure.

How?

Mexican citizens are now worried about the spread of the coronavirus, which led to a statement by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in which he tried to allay fears by questioning the dangerousness of the illness. “I repeat, according to the available information, it is not something terrible, fatal … There shouldn’t be any yellow journalism, or exaggerations, to cause a mass psychosis of fear, of terror,” he said.

Of course, one of the most important questions here is how the coronavirus got to Mexico. The answer seems to be through traveling.

According to Fox News, both individuals had just returned to Mexico after a trip to Northern Italy, where cases of the coronavirus have also been reported.

Outlook

According to the World Health Organization, Mexico has now become the 54th country to have a confirmed case of the coronavirus. In other words, the new illness continues to spread.

The total number of coronavirus cases worldwide is currently up around 83,000, with 2,861 deaths, which is approximately 3.5 percent. It has to be remembered, though, that the vast majority of the cases are in China, where the coronavirus originated.

The United States has reported somewhere around 60 people infected with the coronavirus, although because of the nature of the illness, with symptoms not appearing for some time, the actual numbers are hard to determine.

A way to beat the coronavirus has yet to be found, which means that the best we can do for now is to keep its spread minimal.
