Kevin McCarthy says Pelosi may be pursuing third impeachment article

Despite the Democrat-controlled House passing two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump before the holiday recess, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) still has yet to transmit those articles to the Senate for a trial, leaving impeachment in a strange sort of limbo.

One possible reason for Pelosi’s continued delay in forwarding the articles to the Senate is that she may be stalling to wait for more evidence that could support additional articles of impeachment, according to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Breitbart reported.

Impeachment tunnel vision

During an appearance on Fox News’ Justice with Judge Jeanine Saturday, McCarthy revealed that an attorney for the House Democrats made it explicitly clear in federal court just one day prior that the door had been left wide open for additional articles of impeachment to be brought against President Trump.

Asked about the professed urgency that suddenly transformed into an interminable delay on the House-passed articles, McCarthy said, “Well, I think Nancy Pelosi thinks she has more power than she does. Once she names the managers, it will go to the Senate.”

“But an interesting thing happened just yesterday in the U.S. District Court of Appeals inside D.C. Pelosi’s House Attorney, Douglas Letter, made the argument before a judge that they could offer another Article of Impeachment,” the congressman continued.

“This is the only thing the Democrats’ agenda is, to try to impeach this president. [Rep.] Al Green (D-TX) has said it. You’ve heard it from so many other Democrats. It is their only goal of what they’re continuing to try to do. Their case is so weak,” he added. “I think part of the Speaker’s problem is she doesn’t want to show it over to the Senate, because bipartisan they’ll vote against it.”

More articles are “on the table”

The scenario to which McCarthy was referring in regard to House attorney Douglas Letter was a dual hearing held on Friday before a pair of three-judge panels from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals that dealt with House subpoenas for testimony from former White House counsel Don McGahn and for the secret grand jury materials from the special counsel probe into Russian collusion, Politico reported.

At one point during the hearing, Letter made it clear to the judges that Democrats were still in search of additional evidence that could be used against President Trump and specifically mentioned the possibility of additional impeachment articles.

“Yes, that is on the table. There’s no doubt,” Letter said of the prospect of more articles of impeachment being drafted in the future, a declaration the attorney also noted had been specifically authorized by Pelosi herself in advance of the hearing.

“Nothing else on their agenda”

At another point in the interview, Pirro pressed the minority leader on the likelihood of a third article of impeachment, even as the first two have yet to be forwarded as required.

McCarthy replied that “her attorney made that argument in a Court of Appeals in D.C. yesterday before a judge when the judge questioned why are they even asking for this? It dealt with the Mueller Report because impeachment is over.”

“And he says, could there be another impeachment? He said, yes. Nancy Pelosi has signed off on that. We could go to a third Article of Impeachment. They have nothing else on their agenda,” the congressman added. “While this president is taking terrorists out and making America safer, they’re trying to take the president out. They will not put America first by far.”
