Michelle Obama weighs in on Trump-‘Squad’ controversy: ‘It’s our America’

President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of the “squad” of leftist congresswomen has everybody weighing in, including one former first lady.

Michelle Obama is the latest to jump in, declaring that “there’s a place for us all” in America and praising “diversity.”

Obama weighs in

The former first lady took to Twitter on Friday to offer her two cents on the matter.

“What truly makes our country great is its diversity,” she wrote, not bothering to explain how the latter leads to the former. “I’ve seen that beauty in so many ways over the years.”

Then, in the next sentence, she appeared to take a swipe at President Trump, although she stopped short of mentioning him by name.

“Whether we are born here or seek refuge here, there’s a place for us all,” she continued. “We must remember it’s not my America or your America. It’s our America.”

The controversy

Obama’s tweet comes during a week that saw the escalation of the feud between President Trump and the self-titled Democratic “squad,” including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA). Things got underway with a tweet from the president criticizing their leftist, anti-Western views.

“So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” he wrote.

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!” he added.

The ensuing backlash only strengthened as the week went on, especially after the president’s raucous rally on Wednesday, during which the exuberant crowd began chanting “send her back,” in reference to Omar. While the president disavowed the chant, saying he was “not happy” about it, he defended the rally-goers on Friday as “incredible patriots.”

Not the first time

Although Obama has largely kept out of Democratic Party politics since leaving the White House, she hasn’t held back from taking the odd jab at the president.

Recently, for example, during an interview with CBS News, she stated, “The leader of the free world with a tweet can start a war, can crush an economy, can change the future of our children.” For this reason, she continued, the next president must have a “deep seriousness and focus” and lead “with a clear base of facts and ideas” — implying, of course, that President Trump is lacking in these areas.

Barack Obama has not commented on the current controversy.
