Ilhan Omar blasts ‘appalling question’ asking her to condemn female genital mutilation

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) expressed outrage Tuesday when a fellow Muslim asked her to condemn female genital mutilation, calling the question “appalling.”

The question was asked of Omar during a panel discussion at the Muslim Caucus Education Collective’s 2019 Conference, The Washington Examiner reported. Omar, a panelist, flew into a diatribe when the question was asked by the President of Muslims for Progressive Values, Ani Zonneveld.

“[It] is an appalling question because I always feel like there are bills that we vote on, bills we sponsor, many statements we put out, and then we’re in a panel like this and the question is posed,” Omar lamented.

She went on: “Should I make a schedule? Like, does this need to be on repeat every five minutes? Should I be like, ‘So, today I forgot to condemn al-Qaida, so here’s the al-Qaida one. Today I forgot to condemn [female genital mutilation], so here it goes. Today I forgot to condemn Hamas, so here it goes?'”

Ilhan goes off

Omar said she’d voted for multiple bills “doing exactly what you are asking me to do” and that her questioners “could look up my record.” According to Vote Smart, Omar did vote to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act in April, which included classifying female genital mutilation as a part II crime in the Uniform Crime Reports.

It wasn’t clear why she didn’t directly answer the question, however. Instead, she chose to berate the moderator and the person who asked the question.

“I am, I think, quite disgusted to be honest that as Muslim legislators we are constantly being asked to waste our time speaking to issues that other people are not asked to speak to because the assumption exists that we somehow support and are for, right?” Omar said.

Omar then told Zonneveld she was wrong to bring up “an accusation that we might support something that is so abhorrent, so offensive, so evil, so vile.”

Omar under fire

Omar has been under fire lately for situations with her tax filings and speculations that she may have married her brother for immigration reasons. It’s possible that she is on edge because her background and history are being investigated.

As one of the first Muslim women in Congress, Omar has quite an example to set. But she has shown herself to be a radical leftist who would rather cry racism than work to advance her party. While she might vote to oppose female genital mutilation, she has voted for open borders, the Green New Deal, and every other far-left policy item.

Against her party leadership’s advice, she is also pushing to impeach President Donald Trump, even though only a minority of her own party is willing to vote with her. As the Democratic Party splinters, Omar leads the charge to pivot left.

Along with the other members of the now-infamous “Squad,” Omar has been dividing her party and pushing it to the most radical extreme possible. The Squad is now the face of the Democratic Party — and Omar is making it an angry and defensive one.
