Democrat challenger to Mitch McConnell backs out of MSNBC appearance ‘at the last minute’

The Democrat seeking to unseat Mitch McConnell backed out of a media appearance after a rough campaign kick-off.

The Washington Examiner reports that Amy McGrath was scheduled to appear on MSNBC for an interview Sunday, but canceled “at the last minute,” according to interviewer Kasie Hunt, who addressed the mix-up on her show.

McGrath misses her MSNBC moment

The Twitter account for Kasie DC said McGrath would be on the show Sunday night, then backtracked, the Washington Examiner noted.

“Democrat and former fighter pilot Amy McGrath had quite a week after announcing her run against Senator Mitch McConnell in Kentucky,” Hunt said on-air on Sunday. “I was planning on asking McGrath about that race and her fight against Mitch McConnell tonight, but she canceled her appearance on our show at the last minute.

“That invitation does remain open and of course Mr. Leader, we would welcome you, Senator McConnell, anytime as well,” Hunt added.

A spokesperson for McGrath told the Louisville Courier-Journal that the Democrat hopes to appear on the network soon. “We couldn’t make it work and are rescheduling with them,” the spokesperson said.

A longshot to replace McConnell

McGrath’s flubbed opener likely disappointed MSNBC and Hunt, who described her contest with McConnell as a “blockbuster race” last week, the Examiner’s Becket Adams noted.

McConnell is widely despised by liberals for his principled resistance to passing most progressive legislation, as well as his blocking of former President Barack Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland. Democratic candidates for president were even asked how they would get legislation past McConnell during the last primary debates, according to Politico.

But the liberal media’s hype for McConnell’s challenger was quickly frustrated by the incompetence of the candidate.

Indeed, the no-show capped off a challenging first week for McGrath’s campaign thanks to a host of controversial remarks by the Democrat, including a much-scrutinized flip-flop on whether she would have voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. McGrath told the Courier-Journal that she would have supported Kavanaugh’s confirmation, only to flip flop again within mere hours after the ensuing backlash from the left, The Washington Free Beacon noted.

“I was asked earlier today about Judge Brett Kavanaugh and I answered based upon his qualifications to be on the Supreme Court,” McGrath tweeted. “But upon further reflection and further understanding of his record, I would have voted no.”

The former Marine fighter pilot also struggled to explain her 2017 comparison between Donald Trump’s election and 9/11 to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday.

McGrath nevertheless raised a record-breaking $2.5 million within the first 24 hours of her campaign. But will it be enough to overtake McConnell? Only time will tell.
