Bill Maher wants to essentially cut the massive field of more than two dozen Democrats vying for the White House in half.
On his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, the comedian named a whopping 10 2020 hopefuls who he says should drop out of the running for the Democrats’ nomination already.
Dems Booting Dems
Fast on the heels of the two-day Democratic debate, Maher told his panel that there are “too many people in this race.” But he came up with a solution.
“I’m going to get rid of 10 of them right now,” he said, before listing 10 candidates who he says need to “get the f*** out” of the running.
Making that list of those who Maher thinks should abandon their White House dreams are former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, California Rep. Eric Swalwell, Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet, former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang, former Maryland Rep. John Delaney, Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, and author-slash-spiritual guru Marianne Williamson.
Cracking Jokes
Maher and his panel went on to crack jokes about those on his list, including Williamson, who Max Brooks — son of actor Mel Brooks — said snuck her way into Wednesday’s debate amid the massive crowd of White House hopefuls.
“I heard that there were too many Democrats. She snuck through security. She got herself on stage, and Rachel Maddow was just too overwhelmed and didn’t notice,” Brooks joked.
For his part, Maher quipped that Swalwell looks like he wears a toupée and remarked that there are five people with the name Michael Bennet who are more famous than the Colorado senator.
Maher finished the segment by throwing away a photo of de Blasio, saying: “Now we’ve got it down to 10.”
The Chosen Ones
Those 10 who made Maher’s cut included one guest on his show that night, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
“I want you to stick around,” Maher told the congresswoman.
He also kept in the running former Vice President Joe Biden; Sens. Bernie Sanders (VT), Elizabeth Warren (MA), Kamala Harris (CA), Amy Klobuchar (MN) and Corey Booker (NJ); South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg; former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro; and Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee.
Of course, it’s unlikely that those who were told to drop out will be bothered by Maher’s criticisms — but perhaps at least a few of them could stand to take his advice.
