After Facebook bans, ‘The View’ co-hosts worry Ilhan Omar could be next

Facebook is now censoring “dangerous” political points of view, and many on the left have applauded the move. Well, as one talk show co-host put it, they’re okay with it so long as the social media platform doesn’t go after their people.

“The View” co-host and radical leftist Joy Behar admitted that Facebook’s ban on several controversial political figures is a “slippery slope.” “The left won’t like” it if Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MI) makes the list, she added.

Facebook censorship

On Friday’s edition of the ABC program, the panelists discussed Facebook’s recent decision to ban political personalities that it considers “dangerous” — including Alex Jones, Louis Farrakhan, Milo Yiannopoulous, Paul Joseph Watson, and Laura Loomer.

“So Facebook is making good on their promise to combat hate speech,” said Behar. “They’ve banned controversial figures like Alex Jones, Louis Farrakhan. Not that I want to hear from any of them, but does this violate their First Amendment rights? They’re not allowed to spew their hatred on a Facebook page.”

Co-host Sunny Hostin, a legal analyst for ABC News, took the first crack at the issue, saying that it makes her “uncomfortable.”

“It just does make me uncomfortable that you have this private organization being able to take away the speech of private individuals,” said Hostin. “There’s something about it that makes me — makes the lawyer in me uncomfortable.”

Slippery slope

Hostin was unable to put forth a reasoned opinion in defense of free speech. But those who took the opposing point of view, including guest host Ana Navarro, were no better.

“I have no issue with it at all,” said Navarro. “I want them shut down, silenced, muted. I think they’re bad for our society.”

At this point, Behar, acting as the moderator for this segment, asked, “Don’t you feel it’s a slippery slope?”

“I think so,” Hostin replied.

“I mean, you can say Ilhan Omar can be on there now,” Behar continued. “The left won’t like that.”

True colors

All in one go, Behar essentially admitted two things: first, that at least some members of the left are perfectly okay with Facebook’s double standard for mainly censoring speech on the right; and second, that Omar has engaged in “dangerous” political speech.

Since taking office, and even before, Omar hasn’t been shy about her controversial opinions. Both her anti-Semitic statements and her remarks belittling 9/11 are evidence of that.

One can even argue that there are few more inflammatory politicians or pundits at the moment. As such, Omar, at least according to this new standard, could also end up being censored by Facebook.

But as Behar admitted, that is where the leftist censors will draw the line. Under this new regime, “You are free to say what you please” will become “you are free to say what pleases me.”
