On Friday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) disputed multiple reports suggesting that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 20-month-long Russia investigation was nearing an end and could be concluded as early as next week. But for former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, Mueller’s partisan charade has gone on long enough.
“We should have had the report out already to prove to the world something I already know,” Lewandowski said during a Friday interview with Fox & Friends. “There was no collusion, no cooperation, no coordination between the Trump campaign and any outside entity to impact the outcome of the 2016 election.”
Enough is enough
“The Mueller report should have been handed in this week,” Lewandowski said, noting that the president’s trip to Hanoi to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un was responsible for the publishing delay.
“But let’s be clear,” he continued, “if there was anything, this is on the Obama watch. And [James] Comey and [James] Clapper and [John] Brennan are the ones who would have been responsible,” Lewandowski insisted, referring to the U.S. intelligence chiefs under former President Barack Obama. “They never came to the campaign and said, ‘The Russians are trying to hack the election.’”
Take a look at his full interview:
Lewandowski, who left the Trump campaign in June 2016 after helping the now-president win the Republican Party nomination, believes that the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton should be held accountable for the Russian election interference. President Trump has expressed similar opinions in the past, asking why his predecessor didn’t work harder to stop Russian cyber attacks, “especially when it was reported that President Obama was informed by the FBI in September, before the [e]lection.”
The president has also questioned why Clinton hasn’t been more transparent with federal investigators. “Where is the [Democratic National Committee] Server, and why didn’t the FBI take possession of it?” he asked.
According to then-FBI Director James Comey, who testified regarding the DNC servers before Congress in January 2017, the FBI made “multiple requests at different levels” to access the hacked servers, but agents were repeatedly denied access to them.
Nothing to hide
Unlike the Democratic Party, however, Lewandowski doesn’t have anything to hide. When asked about the Mueller report’s eventual publication, the Republican consultant said that he hopes the special counsel’s conclusions are released in full.
“I think the American people have seen a $40 million witch hunt against this president,” Lewandowski said. “They have a right to see where their money has been spent. And if this report is honest, it is going to say one thing and it’s going to be very clear: The Trump campaign didn’t collude with anybody.”
Like many Republicans, Lewandowski hopes that the Mueller report details how the Clinton campaign and the DNC colluded with Russian sources by funding the infamous Trump dossier. During the height of the 2016 campaign season, Democrats funded an unverified political opposition research mission that relied on intelligence gathered from Russian government operatives to make salacious claims about Trump that have never been verified, but were later used to obtain warrants to spy on the Trump campaign.
“We want the report to be made public so the American people can see that,” Lewandowski said.
