As America’s most profound lyricist Taylor Swift once so eloquently stated, “the haters gonna hate,” and President Trump’s fast food banquet for the Clemson University football national champions on Monday night got plenty of it. Some of his guests, however, were singing a different tune.
According to TMZ Sports, Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence couldn’t get enough of President Trump’s offering of Big Macs, Wendy’s hamburgers, pizza, and fries. In fact, he wants to do it again.
“It was awesome,” Lawrence told TMZ while taking pictures with Clemson fans. “We had McDonalds and everything. It was good!”
When a fan asked Lawrence on how many times he plans on returning to the White House, the champion QB enthusiastically replied, “Hopefully, a few more!”
Indeed, as a freshman, Trevor Lawrence may get his wish, so long as he leads Clemson to another national championship, which would then be followed up by another helping of fast food at the Trump White House. Hopefully, the president will go with Chick-fil-A and Taco Bell next time.
The young quarterback is also a proud Christian, which he says takes first place in his life priorities over football.
“Football’s important to me, but it’s not my life,” he said in 2018. “It’s not the biggest thing in my life. My faith is. That just comes from kind of knowing who I am outside of that. I just know, no matter how big the situation is, it is not really going to define me … I put my identity in what Christ says, who He thinks I am and who I know that He says I am.”
President Trump also gave the fast food banquet two-thumbs up, which comes as a shock to no one, being that he regularly eats fast food and boasts about it openly. In a way, the Clemson champions got the most presidential treatment of all on Monday night.
The President tweeted, “Great being with the National Champion Clemson Tigers last night at the White House. Because of the Shutdown I served them massive amounts of Fast Food (I paid), over 1000 hamberders [sic] etc. Within one hour, it was all gone. Great guys and big eaters!”
The president told reporters upon returning from his trip to New Orleans that the meal was meant to be “a little fun.”
“We ordered American fast food, paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza,” Trump said. “We have some very large people that like eating, so I think we’re going to have a little fun.”
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that since much of the White House staff has been furloughed via the government shutdown, “the president is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone’s favorite fast foods.”
Aside from the haters on Twitter, late-night hosts unilaterally mocked the feast from the comforts of their studios on Monday night as well.
“Maybe the president sensed he was in over his head here because he quickly changed the subject to things he is an expert in: Watching football and eating fast food,” said Colbert. “Mr. President, is it possible you’re just projecting your favorite foods onto them? We’re going to eat all of their favorite foods. Burgers, KFC, taco bowls, two scoops of ice cream. We’re gonna watch their favorite movie, the 2016 election results, then I will spank them all with a rolled up Forbes. I hear they’re really into that.”
