A mass exodus appears to be underway in the office of Kamala Harris, with staffers desperate to untether their careers from the historically unpopular vice president.
One of Harris’ closest aides, Symone Sanders, announced her resignation last week, and now more staffers are “eyeing the exits,” according to a new report from Politico.
The news has Harris allies scrambling to rehabilitate her image.
“Not a healthy environment”
Some are advising that she seek a public “reset,” but others are wary that this approach will only make her vice presidency look more unstable, Politico notes.
Meanwhile, Axios reports that staffers are feeling burned out and afraid of being too closely associated with Harris, who has the approval of just 28% of Americans in one poll.
They are just the latest unflattering reports of dysfunction and low morale in Harris’ office, which insiders described as “abusive” to Politico in June.
“It’s not a healthy environment and people often feel mistreated. It’s not a place where people feel supported but a place where people feel treated like s***,” a source told Politico at the time, according to Fox News.
“If we mess this up…”
There have also been rumors of tensions between and Harris and Joe Biden’s team, as Democrats fret that Harris does not have what it takes to defend the White House in 2024, should Biden be unable to seek re-election. Harris’ own White House bid notably flamed out in 2019 before primaries even started.
Some of Harris’ own staffers “don’t want to be aligned with Harris in the event another promising Democrat runs for president in 2024,” Axios reported.
It all makes for a dramatic turnaround for the first female vice president, who received rapturous coverage about her race and gender when she assumed the role. Now, Democrats are worried about the message her abysmal performance will send.
“If we mess this up, it’s going to set women back when it comes to running for higher office for years to come,” one operative told Axios.
Democrat loyalist Donna Brazile is encouraging Harris allies not to despair, telling Politico, “Every opportunity that you get in politics to renew and repurpose is a good opportunity.” Sadly, all the “resets” and PR tricks in the world can’t hide the fact that Harris is an unlikeable phony.
