Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) called on Americans to “fire” Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) in the midterm elections during a recent Fox News segment.
The House minority leader, who is campaigning for Speaker Pelosi’s job, joined Fox’s Sean Hannity on Monday to blast President Joe Biden’s agenda.
With gas prices skyrocketing and the southern border out of control, McCarthy said it’s not too late to right the ship by electing Republicans. “The good news is, Sean,” he said, “in less than one year, we can fix this country if we fire Nancy Pelosi.”
McCarthy’s big promises
According to a transcript from Fox, Hannity opened the segment by playing a new advertisement from the McCarthy Victory Fund targeting Pelosi and the results of “one party rule” under the Biden administration.
In his interview with Hannity, McCarthy emphasized that it only took “one year” for America to fall into decline under the Democrats and called on voters to elect new leadership.
“Had Joe Biden done nothing in office, literally gone to sleep, our country would be stronger,” he said. “We’d be energy independent. It wouldn’t be China and Russia winning, it’d be America that was winning. Our borders would be secure.”
When asked if Republicans would “completely” stop Biden’s agenda, McCarthy said they would. “No longer will we have inflation. No longer will we look to OPEC to solve our energy crisis. The gasoline price will be lower. The border will be secure,” he vowed, according to Fox’s transcript.
Not all Republicans on board
Pelosi, 81, is widely seen as nearing retirement, and McCarthy has made no secret of his desire to take her job.
The House GOP leader is feeling his oats, with polls showing that Republicans are favored to take the majority in a red wave in 2022. Democrats suffered brutal losses in Virginia this year, and Republicans are said to be in their most advantageous midterms position in 40 years.
Despite his frequent criticism of Pelosi, McCarthy has generally been deferential to the House speaker, and critics to his right say McCarthy is too compromising to lead conservatives in the House.
Conservative firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) recently said that McCarthy has failed to stop the constant “abuse” from Democrats toward conservative members and that he doesn’t have the votes to be elected speaker.
“He doesn’t have the votes that are there, because there’s many of us that are very unhappy about the failure to hold Republicans accountable, while conservatives like me, Paul Gosar, and many others just constantly take the abuse by the Democrats,” the congresswoman said, according to The Hill. “The American people aren’t going to have it.”
