Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) has been unwilling to admit wrongdoing in his support of the now-discredited dossier compiled by British ex-spy Christopher Steele according to The Washington Examiner.
The dossier was the basis for much of the prolonged Russia investigation that targeted former President Donald Trump for the majority of his presidency.
Schiff was asked if he had any remorse about his promotion of the now-debunked documents that was used essentially as blackmail against Trump, but he was unbending, assuring that his source was “well-respected” and seeming to indicate he didn’t feel he did anything wrong.
During an interview with Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd Chiffons was asked on Sunday if he regrets anything after former State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus made headlines for confronting the House Intelligence Committee chairman on The View about him his support of the dossier.
“I don’t regret saying that we should investigate claims of someone who, frankly, was a well-respected British intelligence officer,” Schiff responded during the NBC interview.
The questions came after Schiff was shown clips of his own former interviews about the dossier, which made a plethora of now-discredited acccusations about former President Trump and his 2016 campaign’s commendations to Russia.
“And we couldn’t have known, of course, years ago, that we would learn years later that someone who was a primary source lied to him,” the California Democrat continued.
“But what I just said, in the clip you just played, ends up being exactly right, which is Steele did reveal that the Russians were trying to help elect Donald Trump. That turned out to be all too true.”
Steele himself stood by his work to the bitter end, however, defending his dossier during an interview just before more information about the dossier became available:
“I stand by the work we did, the sources that we had, and the professionalism which we applied to it,” Steele told ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos .
While Schiff has maintained that Steele is “well-respected,” the FBI has withdrawn their support of the British officer, ensuring that he is no longer used as an informant for their agency.
Ortagus previously told Schiff he “helped spread disinformation for years by promoting this” pointing out that the American people had “entrusted” him with special responsibilities in his position as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Schiff’s response was to disagreed with her “premise.”
