Report: “The Democratic brand is broke.”

The Democrats appear to have just gotten an unpleasant reality check.

Politico reports the Democrats as just finding out that their “entire brand” is a “wreck,” and that, as a result, their political future is looking fairly bleak.

Politico: “The Democratic brand is broke.”

Apparently, the Democrats got the wake-up call following Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s recent defeat to Republican Glenn Youngkin in Virginia’s gubernatorial race.

Politico reports that, following that defeat, the Democrats tried to find out what went wrong. And, they didn’t like what they discovered.

The outlet reports:

What they discovered, largely through focus groups and polling, was even worse than expected. The problems cut far deeper than the failings of their gubernatorial nominee, Terry McAuliffe, or President Joe Biden’s flagging approval ratings. Rather, the Democratic Party’s entire brand was a wreck.

The Democrats’ problems

Politico cited as a source a report produced by a left-leaning group called Third Way, one of the groups that tried to figure out what went wrong following McAuliffe’s defeat.

What Third Way found was that “voters couldn’t name anything that Democrats had done, except a few who said we passed the infrastructure bill.” Third Way also found that most of the people that they spoke with “could not articulate what Democrats stand for,” and that “they could also not say what [the Democrats] are doing in Washington, besides fighting.”

And, an important thing to point out, here, is that Third Way, according to Politico, only spoke with “people who voted for Biden.”

Politico, thus, suggested that the Democrats are suffering from an identity crisis. The outlet writes:

Less than a year ahead of midterm elections, in which even Democrats widely expect they will lose the House and, possibly, the Senate, the party is confronting an identity crisis. It isn’t just Biden’s cratering public approval ratings, inflation, or the precedent that the party in power typically loses seats in a president’s first midterm.

And, the outlet goes on to note that the sort of legislation that the Democrats are pushing, including Biden’s Build Back Better Act, isn’t going to fix this problem. The outlet writes:

The most devastating part of the report was the finding that everything the Democrats have been banking their future on — the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the far-left social spending bill — “show few signs of helping them at the ballot box.”

Looking ahead

The big question, of course, is what this all means for the 2022 midterm elections. And, the answer is pretty obvious.

Politico reports one “Democratic strategist who advises major donors” as saying, “too late. We’re f*****.”
