Report: Biden admin. could reimplement Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy this week

Reports are indicating that President Joe Biden and his administration could reimplement former President Donald Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy as soon as this upcoming week.

Biden, of course, has tried his hardest to get rid of the Remain in Mexico policy, also known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). Trump implemented the policy, which requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for their case to be heard, to slow down illegal immigration.

After Biden took office, he ended the Remain in Mexico policy, going back to catch and release, which, as the numbers have shown, only encourages illegal immigration. But, Biden was subsequently taken to court and lost.

Now, Biden and his administration have to comply with a court order requiring the Remain in Mexico policy to be reinstated. And, reports are indicating that it could happen this week.

The latest

The Biden administration recently put out a statement indicating that they are on the verge of reimplementing the Remain in Mexico policy.

“As we have previously stated, we are required by court order to reimplement MPP,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said. “In compliance with the court order, we are working to reimplement MPP as promptly as possible.”

The spokesperson added that the administration is just waiting on Mexico to give the okay.

“We cannot do so until we have the independent agreement from the government of Mexico to accept those we seek to enroll in MPP,” the spokesperson said. “We will communicate to the court and to the public the timing of reimplementation when we are prepared to do so.”

Mexico’s response

Mexico just put out a set of conditions that it wants to be met before it allows the Biden administration to restart the Remain in Mexico policy.

The Hill reports:

Mexico is asking that development programs for southern Mexico and Central America be accelerated in an effort to address the root causes of migration. Additionally, Mexico asked that migrants get medical attention and COVID-19 vaccines and requested “additional resources” for shelters and assistance with legal advice, the news service added.

Reports are indicating that the Biden administration will make one change to Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy: it will offer coronavirus vaccines to asylum-seekers, although it will not force the vaccines on them.

But, it looks like the Biden administration will meet Mexico’s conditions, which means that it is only a matter of time now before it, begrudgingly, reimplements Trump’s policy.
