Dying man survives battle with COVID after judge orders ivermectin treatment

A Chicago-area judge ordered a hospital to give a man dying of COVID-19 the drug ivermectin as he was placed on a ventilator and, fortunately, the man began to recover, ultimately surviving a brush with death.

DuPage County Circuit Court Judge Paul Fullerton asked Edward Hospital, “What’s the downside?” of trying ivermectin for Sun Ng, a retired Hong Kong-based 71-year-old contractor who was in Illinois to celebrate his granddaughter’s first birthday.

The hospital argued that there could be side effects to the drug’s use, that giving ivermectin would violate its policies, and that the judge’s order would be “extraordinary” judicial overreach.

Fullerton disagreed and ordered that the drug be administered to Ng, as his family and his doctor requested.

Ivermectin worked

After arguments against the order for several more days, the hospital finally complied. By the end of the five-day course, Ng was off the ventilator and is now off supplemental oxygen, and he’s expected to fully recover.

The doctor who insisted on trying ivermectin, Allan Bain, had done so with two other patients prior to Ng, with similar results. Interestingly, both previous times he was also forced to ask the court to be allowed to use the treatment.

“Every day after ivermectin, there was accelerated and stable improvement,” said Dr. Bain. “Three times we’ve shown something. There’s a signal of benefit for ventilator patients.”

Many hospitals have refused to use ivermectin after unvaccinated Republicans touted it as a successful treatment. As The Daily Beast noted, media figures have mocked the use of the drug as “horse dewormer,” even though it has been widely used with humans, and had previously garnered a Nobel prize.

Too cheap for pharma?

Advocates of the drug claim it works well on ventilated patients, and some say it is getting a bad rap because it is cheap and could compete with new anti-viral COVID-19 drugs coming to market soon.

Instead of trying the controversial drug, the hospital, in Ng’s case, told his family to let him die “naturally.”

But his family was not ready to let him go, and wanted to truly exhaust all options open to them, including ivermectin. Thankfully he was able to receive it.

The order is a victory for those who want to try the drug. As Fullerton and the hospital both admitted, the risk of serious side effects was not great, especially when the patient is already at death’s door. Since when do doctors and hospitals not make every effort to preserve life?
