Although President Joe Biden campaigned as a moderate, former President Donald Trump predicted that he would be a “puppet” of the far left.
Recent reports, however, suggest any such progressive puppetmasters within the Democratic Party are beginning to question how long the show can go on.
“An inspiring, progressive alternative”
Amid declining approval ratings for Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, their party appears to be scrambling in its effort to defend the White House in 2024 even as it frets about the prospect of losing control of Congress next year.
Although Biden has signaled his intention to seek re-election, speculation continues to swirl that he will ultimately choose not to run in 2024. Facing an uncertain election cycle and historically low popularity for the vice president, Democrats are said to be considering potential successors for the current president.
Thus far, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has attracted significant media attention as some Democrats apparently see the failed 2020 presidential candidate as a source of new hope for the party.
Meanwhile, some in the far-left wing of the party reportedly find Buttigieg and other Democratic leaders to be too moderate. One party insider recently suggested that “someone like” U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) could be an “inspiring” choice to rally leftist Democrats.
“If Harris and Pete are viewed as front-runners, there’s a lot of room for an inspiring, progressive alternative,” the individual said.
“That makes this a totally open seat”
Some critics might argue that if Warren, who also launched an unsuccessful 2020 presidential bid, qualifies as “inspiring,” the party is in even worse shape than it appears.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is unlikely to throw his hat in the ring, according to sources cited by The Hill. The progressive icon seemed eager to submit to the Biden administration after dropping out of the 2020 Democratic primary race and has generally fallen in line with the president since Inauguration Day.
Former Sander campaign co-chair Nina Turner, however, affirmed that all bets are off if Biden chooses not to run for a second term.
“If President Joe Biden does not seek re-election for whatever reason, that makes this a totally open seat,” she said. “Period.”
Of course, one recent poll found that Harris remains the Democratic Party favorite if Biden does not run in 2024. Could things really be that bad?
