President Joe Biden has pursued a climate agenda that critics say will result in America becoming more dependent on foreign energy sources.
Now, a Missouri-based power company is warning customers about the potentially negative consequences that could result from a decision to shut down the STL Pipeline.
“There are no guarantees”
According to the Daily Caller, Spire Energy reacted to recent reports that the president is considering whether to shut down the pipeline.
The company sent an email out to customers across Missouri on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, while the STL Pipeline continues to operate today, it is now in jeopardy,” Spire Energy explained. “As a result, we want to keep you informed and prepared for potential natural gas disruption — and outages — this winter if the pipeline is not kept in service.”
The email went on to explain that the pipeline is operating under temporary federal approval that is set to expire on Dec. 13.
As the company noted, that “only takes us halfway through Missouri’s coldest months” and “there are no guarantees it will operate” beyond the expiration of its temporary approval.
Regulators set to consider dispute
Spire Energy serves roughly 1.7 million homes across Missouri, Alabama, and Mississippi. In the St. Louis region alone, the company serves about 650,000 homes and businesses.
For its part, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is preparing for a hearing about whether to revoke the STL Pipeline’s permit. That hearing is set to take place next week.
After receiving its permit in 2018 and beginning to serve customers the following year, the pipeline has faced challenges including a lawsuit from the Environmental Defense Fund, which hopes to see the FERC approval revoked.
One judge has already ruled in favor of the EDF, finding that the FERC did not properly analyze the pipeline’s permit request. It is this dispute that led to the review scheduled for Thursday.
It is uncertain how the commission is going to rule on the matter — but the Biden administration’s stated position against fossil fuels might signal a negative outcome for the pipeline and the individuals it serves. As Spire Energy explained in its frank message to customers, the consequences of shutting down this major pipeline could be devastating.
