It’s what we all have been waiting for.
Former President Donald Trump has just announced that he will be launching a new social media app.
The name of the app will be TRUTH social.
In a press release, Trump said that the app will be “a rival to the liberal media consortium.”
“Trump Media & Technology Group’s mission is to create a rival to the liberal media consortium and fight back against the ‘Big Tech’ companies of Silicon Valley, which have used their unilateral power to silence opposing voices in America,” the statement reads.
This move comes after the Trump Media and Technology Group entered into a merger with Digital World Acquisition Group. The initial funding for the new app is expected to come from Digital World’s IPO from last month.
TRUTH social is expected to be beta-launched sometime in November. Its full release, though, is not expected until sometime during the first quarter of 2022.
In the meantime, the app is available for pre-order. And, Apple’s store says that TRUTH social is currently expected on February 21, 2022.
Background
This all comes after Big Tech, including Facebook and Twitter, suspended Trump’s accounts. They did so under the guise of preventing further violence following the riot that broke out at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.
Since being deplatformed, Trump has largely been communicating with Americans via his Save America political action committee, frequently releasing statements therefrom. But, Trump suggested that he would create a social media platform of his own, and here we are.
Trump has also recently filed a lawsuit against Google, Twitter, and Facebook looking to get his accounts reinstated. Here, Trump is arguing that his free speech rights have been violated by Big Tech, which has been operating in conjunction with the federal government making it subject to the First Amendment.
Trump’s suspension from social media comes at the same time as we have seen Big Tech go after conservative voices and viewpoints. And, Trump is hoping that both his lawsuit and social media site will help to address this problem.
Before being suspended, Trump had some 80 million followers on Twitter. If most of them follow him over to TRUTH social, the site should get off to a good start.
