President Joe Biden’s approval rating has been steadily declining in recent years amid criticism of his policies on various issues, notably the chaotic troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
A stunning new poll finds that a majority of Americans now want Biden to resign for his botched mission to end the Afghanistan war.
Contradictory statements
The news comes after military leaders including Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley testified before Congress about the troop pullout.
According to Milley, Biden did hear from advisers who recommended keeping a remnant of U.S. service members in Afghanistan, contradicting the president’s own remarks in August that he was not presented with such an option.
Furthermore, Biden’s attempt to blame the ordeal on his predecessor has fallen flat among many Americans.
Although former President Donald Trump did express a desire to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan, he appeared to back off from that stance when military leaders warned that it could pave the way for the Taliban to once again take over the war-torn nation.
In light of these and other details, Rasmussen Reports surveyed 1,000 likely voters between Wednesday and Thursday.
Bipartisan outrage
One of the questions gauged whether respondents believed it would have been better for Biden to keep 2,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan instead of staging a complete withdrawal. Less than one in four said no, compared to a clear majority — 60% — who said yes.
Asked whether they believe Biden or Milley, 57% sided with the top general.
The most damning response came in response to a question asking respondents if they “agree or disagree” with the statement “Biden cannot avoid the consequences of his actions in Afghanistan” and “must resign” as a result. A whopping 55% agreed, compared to just 39% who did not.
Of course, it seems exceptionally unlikely that Biden will step down over the controversy, at least any time soon. But this and other recent polls continue to provide a clear representation of where Americans stand.
Some GOP lawmakers are taking it a step further by citing Afghanistan, among other issues, as just cause for the president to be impeached. As Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL) explained: “It’s a grassroots pressure — we’re feeling it. I think even some of the Democrats are feeling it.”
