President Joe Biden has received widespread criticism for his immigration policies amid an ongoing border crisis.
Now, projections suggest the situation might be getting even worse with as many as 350,000 illegal border crossings possible this month.
Illegal border crossings remain high
If accurate, that number would dwarf even the record-high rates of illegal immigration recorded thus far in the Biden administration.
In July and August, for example, just over 200,000 immigrants illegally crossed the border each month, meaning those staggering numbers could nearly double in October.
For his part, the president has continued using Title 42, a public health order allowing deportations during the COVID-19 pandemic, to expel some undocumented immigrants — but that policy is set to be rescinded.
Last month, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled that the Biden administration cannot use Title 42 to block asylum seekers from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
His ruling was supposed to go into effect on Thursday, but the White House is pursuing an appeal. It is unclear whether any significant progress has been made thus far.
Things could get worse
Nevertheless, Biden officials believe Sullivan’s order could lead to a record number of illegal border crossings. As NBC News reported, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is said to have asked agency officials if they were prepared for as many as 400,000 migrant border crossings this month.
Of course, the Department of Homeland Security insiders who revealed that information stressed that the number is just an estimate and is not based on specific intelligence reports.
It is worth noting that Sullivan’s order would also prevent the Biden administration from using Title 42 to expel undocumented immigrants, meaning hundreds of thousands of individuals would be permitted to remain in the United States as their asylum claims are being processed.
As the fiscal year closes, initial reports already suggest that 2021 was the busiest year on record for apprehensions along the southern border. If Sullivan’s order causes the chaos predicted, however, Americans might be looking back on this year as not so bad after all.
In any case, GOP lawmakers are increasingly displeased with the Biden administration’s performance as a growing number cite the border crisis, among other issues, in calling for his impeachment.
