Obama blasts Virginia Republican for sowing ‘fake outrage’ following alleged rape at Loudoun high school
Many Americans were horrified by the release of a new report from The Daily Wire suggesting the school board in Loudoun County, Virginia covered up a sexual assault that occurred on one of their campuses in order to protect its policy on which bathrooms transgender students should use.
Those allegations have since become an issue in the Old Dominion State’s hotly contested gubernatorial race. But rather than condemning the rape and alleged cover-up by school officials, former President Barack Obama appears to be brushing it off.
Breitbart reports that Obama was campaigning on behalf of former Virginia governor and current gubernatorial hopeful Terry McAuliffe (D) on Saturday when he lashed out at Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin.
Obama complains of “fake outrage”
Although the former president did not specifically mention the case in Loudoun County, Obama slammed Youngkin for focusing on hot-button topics rather than “serious problems that actually affect serious people.”
“We don’t have time to be wasted on these phony trumped-up culture wars, this fake outrage, the right-wing media’s pedals to juice their ratings,” Obama was quoted by Breitbart as saying.
“That’s a shame,” the former president complained. “That’s not what this election is about. That’s not what you need, Virginia.”
Virginia governor race heats up
Youngkin, for his part, has regularly brought up McAuliffe’s ties to Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Buta Biberaj throughout the campaign season. Fox News noted that Biberaj, who has received financial support from a group backed by George Soros, was praised by McAuliffe in a 2019 tweet.
Biberaj sought to have Loudoun County father Scott Smith put in jail following his arrest at a school board meeting in June, though she previously campaigned against mass incarceration.
Smith was involved in an altercation after board members denied that there was any record of his daughter’s alleged assault in her high school bathroom.
In fact, local news outlet WTOP has obtained an email sent to the board by Loudoun County Public Schools Superintendent Scott Ziegler describing the incident.
In an interview with The Daily Wire, Smith’s attorney, Elizabeth Lancaster, expressed shock that Biberaj sought to put the father behind bars. “I’d guess in my 15 years the number of times I’ve seen that happen would be zero,” Lancaster said.
“The idea that this is a person who we need to put in a cage was astounding to me given the social justice reform she was pushing. I was blown away,” she added.
