McConnell: Democrats ‘didn’t get a mandate’ to turn America into ‘Bernie Sanders’ socialist vision’

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and his “socialist vision” for America might not survive to the next midterm elections, if Republicans have their way.

In a Thursday appearance on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) blasted progressive agenda items including President Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan, a massive spending proposal that the Republican leader characterized as “irresponsible” and “reckless.”

“The American people didn’t vote to turn this country into Bernie Sanders’ socialist vision,” McConnell said, according to Breitbart.

“Once they start, they never end”

As it stands, Biden’s plan comes with a price tag of roughly $3.5 trillion and, according to The Guardian, “focuses on a long list of social policies and programs ranging from education to health care to housing to climate.” Democrats want to pass it through Congress’ upper chamber using a process known as budget reconciliation, which would allow them to get the bill to Biden’s desk without any GOP support.

McConnell, for his part, told Fox on Thursday that the proposal is highly partisan and would hurt the nation’s economic recovery in the wake of COVID-19.

“Look, this is just one more round of the kind of inflationary policies that they enacted earlier this year on a party-line basis,” he said, according to Breitbart. “[Democrats] dumped almost $2 trillion on the economy, sent inflation through the roof, and they aren’t through. They want to keep on doing it with higher taxes and entitlement programs.”

The Kentucky senator added: “Their gamble is once they start, they never end. And of course, the deficit continues to mount.”

“They didn’t get a mandate”

McConnell went on to indicate that Republicans in the Senate would stand firm against the package, which he said Americans by and large don’t support. If they did, the minority leader said, they would have voted more Democrats into the Senate last November.

“The American people would be a lot better off if this reckless tax and spend package never passed,” McConnell said, according to Breitbart.

“They didn’t get a mandate from the American people to do this,” he added in his talk with Fox. “A 50/50 Senate, a couple of seat majority in the House — this is not like the vast majorities that Roosevelt had in the 30s or that Lyndon Johnson had in the 60s.”
