Trump, DeSantis emerge as clear favorites looking to 2024 GOP primary, poll shows

Looking ahead to the 2024 presidential election, former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis continue to dominate the GOP field in the polls.

Breitbart reported Saturday that in the latest survey of Republican voters, Trump and DeSantis were the only two potential 2024 candidates who garnered double-digit support.

“An overwhelming majority of Republican voters, 67 percent, said they would vote for Trump in a hypothetical 2024 GOP primary,” Breitbart reported. DeSantis won the support of 10% of respondents.

The numbers suggest that if the two ran together, with DeSantis serving as Trump’s running mate, they’d easily win over Republican voters. But will it actually happen?

A clear favorite

Others to see high levels of support in the recent poll of GOP voters included former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who also once served as South Carolina governor. According to Breitbart, 7% of respondents said they’d vote for her in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, if she ran.

Former Vice President Mike Pence got 6% support among those surveyed, Breitbart reported.

The numbers changed, however, if former President Trump was taken out of the running. With Trump out of the field, DeSantis is the clear favorite, with 32% of respondents saying they’d choose him in a 2024 primary.

DeSantis’ next closest rival, without Trump in the race, is former Vice President Mike Pence, with the support of 24% of respondents in that scenario.

The poll, taken by Emerson College, surveyed 1,200 registered voters between Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.

The winning ticket

The pollster also asked voters of all political leanings to choose who they’d vote for in various hypothetical scenarios come November 2024. Asked to choose between Trump and Biden, Trump came out on top among respondents, 47% to 46% — well within the poll’s margin of error. Six percent of respondents chose “someone else,” while 2% were “undecided.”

Separately, the pollster put DeSantis up against Biden, and it became clear that DeSantis wouldn’t do as well as Trump; the Florida governor lost to Biden by a margin of 12 percentage points. Another 12% of those surveyed chose “someone else,” and 5% chose “undecided” in that scenario.

At this point, it remains unclear if either of these prominent Republicans will throw their hats in the ring for the White House in 2024. But the numbers do make at least one thing obvious: A Trump–DeSantis ticket would be a tough one for Democrats to beat.
