MSNBC host Tiffany Cross referred to Amy Coney Barrett as a “handmaid” Saturday, the Daily Caller reported, after the Supreme Court justice voted against an effort challenging a Texas law banning abortion in the state as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.
According to the Daily Caller, the remark from Cross referenced a 1985 novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale, which has now been made into a hit TV series.
“We have an actual handmaid on the court,” Cross said on The Cross Connection Saturday, according to the Daily Caller. “I’m not so excited about depending on them to protect me and my right to choose,” she added.
“Beyond comprehension”
The MSNBC host also Saturday that she was “outraged” by the high court’s “unacceptable” move, which allowed the Texas law to take effect, at least temporarily.
“This entire thing about protecting the fetus when they care so little for life in this country is beyond comprehension,” she said, as the Daily Caller reported.
“They really must hate women in Texas and all across the country,” Cross charged. “How is it possible the Supreme Court allowed this to stand?”

Protecting the unborn
Barrett sided with the court’s four most conservative justices in a 5–4 decision last week not to block the Texas abortion law.
According to the BBC, Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the Supreme Court’s liberal jurists in dissent.
Pro-lifers across the country have celebrated the high court’s decision, which opposers fear may be the first step toward the SCOTUS reversing the precedent set by the 1973 case Roe v. Wade. Indeed, the court may have a chance to do just that with a case on a Mississippi abortion law slated to come before the bench this fall.
For now, Texas has what many consider the toughest pro-life law in the nation. And thanks to President Donald Trump and his record three appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court, similar legislation may soon become commonplace nationwide.
