Study finds nearly 83K ballots mailed to Wisconsin voters in 2020 went ‘missing’ or were ‘undeliverable’

Questions of irregularities in the 2020 presidential election continue to mount, even nearly a year after the last ballots were cast.

According to Breitbart, a new study out of Wisconsin found that nearly 83,000 mail-in ballots sent out by the state ahead of November 2020 had gone “missing” or were ultimately marked “undeliverable.” That’s roughly four times as much as the approximately 20,000-vote margin that President Joe Biden won the state by over former President Donald Trump, Breitbart noted.

The figures come via a new report from a government watchdog group focused on election integrity issues, the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF).

The group reportedly obtained data on mail-in ballots from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and from surveys of local precincts conducted by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (USEAC).

Lost ballots?

In a statement announcing the release of its findings, the PILF said “Wisconsin could brag about” its disorganization when it comes to mail-in ballots.

“Unlike other states its size with an influence in national politics, Wisconsin could brag about the fact that its counts of undeliverable and ‘unknown’ mail ballots never inundated the margin of victory for a statewide candidate — until the 2020 Election,” the group said.

According to the group’s report, out of the 1.4 million mail-in ballots sent out to voters in Wisconsin ahead of the 2020 election, 6,458 were returned as “undeliverable” by the Postal Service. Another 2,981 were rejected by election officials, and 76,308 were listed as “unknown,” meaning they were likely lost somewhere along the way.

They’re stunning numbers compared to the 2016 election, when 158,846 mail-in ballots were sent out in Wisconsin, and only 1,846 of those were marked “undeliverable.” Just 284 of those were rejected back in 2016, and only 11,138 were ultimately listed as “unknown,” according to the PILF’s report.

“The cost of the rush”

For its report, the PILF also analyzed the number of undeliverable and unknown ballots compared to the margins of victory for candidates in Wisconsin in the 2012, 2016, and 2020 national elections. The results were astounding.

In 2012, there were 54,077 undeliverable or unaccounted for ballots, constituting only about a quarter of then-President Barack Obama’s 205,204-vote margin of victory over GOP candidate Mitt Romney, the group reported. Similarly, 12,984 ballots were undeliverable or unknown in 2016, slightly less than half of Trump’s 27,257-vote victory over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

But for 2020, a whopping 82,766 ballots were missing or undelivered, about four times greater than the 20,682-vote margin of victory for Biden over Trump.

“We now know the cost of the rush to mail balloting — lost ballots,” PILF President J. Christian Adams said of the development, according to Breitbart. “The federal data show the 2020 election had more mail ballots that were never counted than the margin of victory in the Presidential election in Wisconsin. This isn’t the way to run an election. Mail ballots invite error, disenfranchisement of voters, and puts the inept U.S. Post Office determining the outcome of elections.”
