Months after Dr. Anthony Fauci’s e-mails were shared with the public, questions remain regarding what he knew about dangerous research at a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
The full text of a damning thank you note, in the form of an e-mail, that Fauci received from Peter Daszak, a key player in funding the research, has been released by Republican senators after it previously raised questions about a cover-up, the Daily Caller reports.
Fully unredacted
When the April 2020 e-mail was shared by Buzzfeed earlier this year, it immediately suggested back-scratching between Fauci and Daszak, whose group, EcoHealthAlliance, had received $600,000 in research funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which Fauci leads.
Daszak thanked Fauci for helping to publicly “dispel the myths” that the virus came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Fauci, according to his e-mails, was privately alarmed that the lab-leak theory was plausible but publicly dismissed such speculation.
The unredacted contents of Daszak’s e-mail were shared by Republican senators in a letter. In a paragraph that was previously redacted, Daszak reflects on a “very hard few months” as “conspiracy theories” began to spread about his research.
“Especially because the work we’ve been doing in collaboration with Chinese virologists has given us incredible insight into the risks that these viruses represent, so that we can directly help protect our nation from bat-origin coronaviruses,” Daszak wrote, defending the research.
“We’re fighting to keep the communications open with our Chinese colleagues, so that we can better address future pandemics like COVID-19.”
What did Fauci know?
In their letter, Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Rick Scott (R-FL), and James Lankford (R-OK) questioned why the e-mail was suppressed for so-called “law enforcement” reasons.
They also condemned the “contempt” the Biden administration has shown by refusing to provide all of Fauci’s e-mails without redactions to Congress, despite a “statutory obligation” to do so.
The Republicans noted that one e-mail that is almost completely redacted contains discussions about a Feb. 1, 2020 conference call with Fauci and other top scientists that has raised eyebrows.
Fauci has responded defensively to the controversy, attacking those who question him as “attacking science.” He positively exploded with rage at a recent hearing when grilled on the lab by Sen. Paul, and claimed it was “molecularly impossible” that the virus was engineered.
Some Republicans have called for Fauci to be fired or even arrested.
