In addition to the sexual misconduct allegations that led to his recent resignation, former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was also embroiled in a scandal surrounding COVID-related nursing home deaths across the state.
During a recent Fox News Channel appearance, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also placed some of the blame for the nursing home scandal on mainstream news outlets.
Cuomo mired in controversy
“I think a lot of it was corporate media,” he declared.
Cuomo was one of several Democratic governors who implemented a policy early on in the COVID-19 pandemic that led to infected patients being readmitted into nursing homes. Such orders have widely been linked to the spread of the potentially deadly virus among the elderly population.
The New York governor exacerbated the situation, however, by allegedly covering up the extent of COVID-related deaths in his state’s nursing homes.
For his part, Cuomo attempted to defend his policy, claiming that “COVID did not get into the nursing homes by people coming from hospitals.”
It remains to be seen whether Cuomo is effectively off the hook on this issue in light of his resignation.
“Trump was their villain”
In any case, DeSantis argued this week that the mainstream media enabled Cuomo, noting that most reporters “never talked about” the nursing home scandal and instead “lionized” the Democratic governor.
DeSantis went on to assert that the reason mainstream media outlets gravitated to Cuomo was that he was a vocal opponent to former President Donald Trump.
“And so, I think the media looked at somebody like Cuomo and thought it was an anti-Trump and I think that they were very much interested in weaponizing COVID against Trump,” the Florida governor said. “Trump was their villain and Cuomo was kind of their hero. Obviously, it doesn’t necessarily work out for them in that regard.”
He claimed that if the media “had been doing their jobs back in March of 2020, some of these nursing home policies may have never been able to be sustained.”
Florida’s approach to the pandemic stands in stark contrast to many of those led by Democratic governors, which could help explain the surging support DeSantis is receiving from Republicans across his state and nationwide.
