Cuomo critics demand accountability for nursing home scandal

Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation this week amid a number of sexual misconduct claims against him.

Columnist Johnathan Tobin, however, argued that those complaints represent just the tip of the iceberg regarding Cuomo’s alleged wrongdoing while in office.

“Illegal coverup”

In a piece for the New York Post on Monday, Tobin wrote that Cuomo should not be allowed to resign over sexual harassment accusations without also being held responsible for a policy linked to widespread COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents and claims that his staff covered up the extent of those consequences.

Asserting that there is “something troubling” in the manner by which Cuomo was allowed to resign, Tobin wrote that the governor “remains responsible for the deaths of perhaps thousands of elderly New Yorkers” and his administration was involved in an “illegal coverup of the numbers highlighting that fact.”

Other prominent critics, including Fox News Channel meteorologist Janice Dean, have also reacted to the resignation by highlighting Cuomo’s disastrous policy of returning patients infected with COVID-19 back to nursing homes.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, whose office compiled the report that prompted Cuomo’s resignation, previously found that the Cuomo administration substantially undercounted nursing home deaths.

Despite the fact that the governor will be stepping down in a matter of days, Tobin insisted that it remains important for all of the details to come out.

“A partisan strategy”

“The families of those who died as a result of his arrogant stupidity and willful ignorance deserve closure for what happened to their loved ones,” he wrote.

Allegations in recent months have brought about a stunning fall from grace for a governor who was widely heralded by the media during the early days of the pandemic. Not only did he bring home an Emmy for his daily press briefings, but he also received a $5 million advance for a book written about the tumultuous period.

Tobin concluded that leftists and many in the mainstream media want to cover up the failures of Cuomo and other Democratic leaders in an effort to continue blaming former President Donald Trump, among other Republicans, for making the pandemic worse.

“New York mustn’t allow Cuomo to evade accountability for his nursing-home fiasco by focusing exclusively on the sexual-harassment charges,” the writer concluded. “That’s a partisan strategy meant not only to bury an injustice but to help Democrats hold power — even as a despicable governor loses his grip on it.”

If Cuomo succeeds in evading responsibility for the nursing home coverup, he could theoretically mount a political comeback. He reportedly still has $18 million in campaign cash to help make such plans a reality.
