President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are both facing major collapses in their approval ratings as they approach six months in office, according to a new Monmouth University poll.
The poll, first reported by The Federalist, noted that Biden’s approval rating dropped from 54% in January to a mere 48% in July.
Among Republicans surveyed, just 10% said they approved of Biden’s performance.
The wrong direction?
Asked if they felt “things in the country are going in the right direction” or if they’d “gotten off on the wrong track,” just 38% said the former. In January, that number sat at 42%, according to Monmouth.
Respondents were also asked about the top concerns facing their families. The top three areas of concern, the pollster said, were the coronavirus pandemic, everyday bills, and the U.S. economy.
Voters were divided regarding the Biden administration’s various spending packages to help jumpstart the economy in the wake of COVID-19, though in many cases the ratings mirrored party preferences.
Harris hurting, too
But Biden was not alone in his recent ratings decline. As The Federalist noted, a July Morning Consult–Politico poll found 47% of registered voters had an unfavorable view of Harris.
Unsurprisingly, Harris garnered high ratings among Democrats, with an 85% approval rating, while only 6% of Republican respondents said they had a favorable view of her.
The biggest surprise was among independent voters. Harris earned the approval of just 38% of them, or less than 4 in 10.
One area of concern for voters may be the Biden administration’s new COVID-19 restrictions. A Rasmussen poll published July 28 showed most voters weren’t pleased with his latest regulations.
“Biden may no longer be enhancing his popularity by playing up health dangers. According to a Rasmussen poll published July 28, his unfavorability rating is at 52%; and those polled express dissatisfaction with his new COVID restriction guidelines.”https://t.co/ZmvOW8o0jz

Overall, the numbers are pointing in the wrong direction for both Biden and Harris as Democrats think about strategy looking toward the 2022 midterm elections. Unless something major changes, Republicans are increasingly likely to see sizeable wins in the House and perhaps even the Senate. Then, it’s all about 2024.
