A Texas Democratic judge has criticized the Biden administration for allowing illegal immigrants with COVID-19 to spread throughout his jurisdiction.
“We have been doing well as a community in slowing the spread of this deadly virus,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said in a news release Tuesday.
“But ill-conceived policies by both the federal and state governments are beginning to have serious consequences on Hidalgo County.”

He added, “I call on federal immigration officials to stop releasing infected migrants into our community and I am further calling on Governor Abbott to return to Hidalgo County the safety tools he took away that would help us slow the spread of this disease.”
The Rio Grande Valley News reported on Tuesday that, “Abbott responded to the increase in illegal crossings Tuesday by ordering national guardsmen to assist Texas Department of Public Safety troopers with arresting migrants who trespass or break any state laws.
“Abbott’s order, however, will not be enforced in the Rio Grande Valley, according to Texas Department of Public Safety officials.”
Surprising Even Local Law Enforcement
The controversy occurred after a Monday report from the La Joya Police Department. They were informed by a local resident that a charity had rented a local hotel to house COVID-19 positive migrants.
Some of the migrants were reportedly eating at a local Whataburger and were asked to leave after seen coughing and sneezing.
Police then said, “We want to inform the public about the current situation we have encountered and ask that the citizens of La Joya exercise social distancing measures and that they please use face masks in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 or its variants,” according to The Hill.
The news comes as CBP reported more than one million illegal immigrants have crossed the nation’s southern border in the first six months of 2021. The total is more than all of 2020.
The reports may help in keeping the Biden administration from ending Title 42 as well. The Trump-era measure allows Border Patrol to turn away illegal immigrants at the border to stop the spread of COVID-19.
